Whether you're making it for a family dinner, a weekend treat or a movie night, this easy homemade pizza recipe delivers a soft, airy crust with a crisp base and plenty of flavour.

Ingredients - For the pizza dough

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¾ to 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes, pureed (or ½ cup tomato puree)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1½ cups grated mozzarella cheese
  • Sliced onions
  • Sliced capsicum (bell peppers)
  • Mushrooms
  • Sweet corn
  • Black olives
  • Jalapeños
  • Cooked chicken, pepperoni or paneer (optional)
  • Dried oregano
  • Chilli flakes
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)

Method

In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar and salt. Add the olive oil and gradually pour in the warm water while mixing.

Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place it in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about one hour, or until it doubles in size.

Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and sauté until fragrant.

Stir in the tomato puree, oregano, basil, chilli flakes, salt and pepper. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until the sauce thickens. Allow it to cool before spreading it over the pizza base.

Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F).

Punch down the risen dough and place it on a lightly floured surface. Roll or stretch it into a 10- to 12-inch circle, depending on your preferred thickness.

Transfer the dough to a greased baking tray or pizza stone.

Spread a generous layer of pizza sauce over the base, leaving a small border around the edges.

Sprinkle half the mozzarella cheese, arrange your chosen toppings evenly, then finish with the remaining cheese.

Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the crust turns golden brown and the cheese is melted, bubbling and lightly browned.

Remove from the oven and let the pizza rest for 2–3 minutes before slicing.

Serving suggestions

Serve your homemade pizza hot with garlic bread, a fresh green salad or a bowl of tomato soup. Finish with a sprinkle of oregano, chilli flakes and a drizzle of olive oil for extra flavour.

Tips for the perfect homemade pizza

  • Use warm—not hot—water to activate the yeast.
  • Allow the dough enough time to rise for a lighter, airier crust.
  • Preheat the oven thoroughly before baking.
  • Avoid overloading the pizza with toppings, as this can make the crust soggy.
  • A pizza stone or preheated baking tray helps create a crispier base.
  • For extra flavour, brush the crust with garlic butter immediately after baking.

With a handful of pantry ingredients and a little patience, you can create a delicious homemade pizza that's crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and loaded with your favourite toppings. Once you've mastered the basics, experiment with different cheeses, sauces and seasonal vegetables to make every pizza uniquely yours.
